This could be fun...

I'm Aradia Sunlight
my brother Alder Robin Rainsong
other brother Terran Twilight Nuadha
A sister Vahana Una Neckabit
another sister Trillium Mckenize

We were named mostly astologically, we all have our own last names. This has been fun explaining over and over again, my entire life. My mom is Daphne SingingTree.
We had two sisters in our community growning up called RunningWater and StarLight, Running Water grew up and changed her name to Rachel. And I don't really thing anyone blamed her.
Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.....

Well, I was the first born and actually got the name that was supposed to be my uncle's, would he have been born a girl. haha. So my name is Alisa Beth with my mother's maiden name. My brother is Mota (spanish street slang for marijuana) with his father's last name. Then we have 2 sisters: Fern Wildflower and Willow Clearwater. All three of them have no middle name, and the girls have their own last names. I was going to name my son Ranier Keya Skye, but when he was born he just felt like "Skye"...no middle name. Yeah, it certainly becomes repetitive trying to explain family names and history. lol.
    • The name game! Re: Let's hear some names???

      Tue, August 1, 2006 - 12:20 AM
Oh, goody, I love this game too! my real name at birth was Ravenmajel Liane Williams. My mother raised me around a spiritual brotherhood where changing one's name was common, so at age seven I became colleen williams for about ten years, I wanted to be normal LOL. Mom had to come up with something intersting to callme soit became Colleen Maureen Evangeline Exedrin for a while. My brother called me everything from Chlorine to Cauliflower.
But at age 17, being a bisexual and polyamorous faerie/hippy girl, I realized I would never be normal. So I went back to being Raven. My married last name was Usi and if you say it fast it comes out Raving Oozy, hahaha!

I went to hippy kid school from age 10-12, where there was a couple of otehr kids with fun names. There was a Vesta, an Osiris and a couple of native american sisters names Gypsy and Spooky. Later when I moved to Mt. Shasta I knew a woman who named her kids (in order of birth) Bumpus Mc-thumpus, Banshee woof (or wolf, never was sure which) Promise of Horses (promisee for short) and Seashell.

Ok well my mom wanted to name me Sage but chickened out on the day of birth. She always told me that it was my true name, however, so I went back to it at 15 when I needed a stage name, and even more so at 18 for a playa name. Since then it has been my most common nickname, althought there are many. Most Sages I know are boys, however, so most hippie children giggle when I tell them my name.

Right now I know children named Jade, Tavis, Bay Rain, Rainie, River, Cedar, Ashlyn, and many more. I love when I ask a child their name and get an answer with some individuality. My child will NOT have a boring name. I wouldn't allow it. When someone tells me their name is Mike or David or Jessica, I am sure to forget it instantly and have to be reminded again and again, especially if there are a bunch at once. Let's hear it for uniqueness!!!

I was born in 59 so I got a "normal" name when my parents were Beats same with my brother born in 62 but the baby of the family was named Taurus Christos which was pretty bizarre acording to white bread America but doesn't seem so far out to me.....

        "my parents were Beats"
        yup...us too
        me and my sister
Me born in '68 got the name of an old friend...Alisa
My sister '63 got a name that was unusual then, and still is now...Daleth
I love it that my mother saw naming as such a deeply powerful thing. I am grateful to have a unique name.
And so it is with my two children. Both embody the energy the name carried.

I was born in San Francisco in the back of a VW bus (almost made it to the hospital) moved to oregon and was raised with 2 goats in the backyard for the goat milk. Brown rice, tofu, cleansing, before it became 'hip'. now i get really excited to buy sugar cereal! such a treat!

growing up i went to this preschool where clothing was optional, my friends now call it naked preschool. My best friends were sisters named blueberry and huckleberry. poor kids.

My name is Lacey Field Fulton, and my little brother is Jubal Fortune Fulton.....though we had kids in the community with names like Netune RainbowBlessing, Manue and Dorje, Aia, Appolonia, the usual Solstices and Summers, I think we had a girl named Meadow. I love hippy names, and am really lucky that I like mine.

I got to pick my own name.. crazy huh? My folks named me James Stephen after my Dad's dad.. (jim was his name) but my Mom didn't like that very much. No clue where the middle name came from since there are no STEPHENS in my family. Granpa's middle name was STEEN.

When I was finally able to communicate :) (hmm.. as if i still can.. lol) my friends Dad (whom I consider my spiritual father) (who helped raise me) let me choose a new name for myself..

I chose Jim for my first name since thats what everyone called me (or Jim/Jimmy/Jimbo) .. but for my middle name I choose "STRAW" which is from two places.. my Hair.. and my last name/ first name combo..

    I miss him . . Peace

Wow...I thought Galya Mai was unusual. When I was young I was always jealous of my sister Anna who had the 'normal' first name...though she hated her middle name 'Wood' and later changed it to the more feminine 'Rosewood.' The running joke in my family was to say..."Well Galya Mai, but Anna Wood!

That reminds me of a time I was watching Star search and Ed McMayhan introduced the next supermodel contestant (read: vanna white wanna-be) as BLUEBERRY! I couldn't believe a girl who looked like that was named blueberry! I couldn't decide if that was funny or cruel and unusal punishement; or just sadistic parents? She certainly looked good enough to eat, but I couldn't imagine the kind of attention she must have gotten.

    These are great!

My older half brother was born in a hospital and they made my mother fill out the birth certificate before she went home with him, so he ended up getting names after his father and mom's father, both who were named Robert. Since neither of them was around, there was never any confusion.

Since I was born in a house, my mom took her time finding the right name for me. By the time I was 6 months old, she was running the kitchen of an alternative school and youth hostel, and I still did not have a name. Apparently, my mom had been trying names, but none of them stuck. One of the woman there was learning hindu music and asked her teacher to come give a concert at the school. The teacher was playing with "the baby" and asked my mom when she was going to name me. When she told him she was taking suggestions he gave her "Ragani" to try out. It is the feminine form of the hindu word "raga" which is a musical term relating to melody. My mom tried it out and has been calling me that ever since.

The funny thing for me is that my older brother is Robert, and my younger siblings are Michael and Lisa (they were born much later and to my dad). I am the only one with a hippie name in the family.

I was not, however, given a middle name, so I later chose Anna as one to use when I needed a more simple name to give. I only really used it as a first name for a short time when I was 12.

As for those I have known through the years, Hallelujah is the only one that comes to mind right now. Hmm... I went to school with a Cedar who was named after where she was conceived (under a cedar tree).

My daughters are Isis Calypso Inez and Ember Briseis Elaine. My son is Kieran Roan. Hippies......the whole lot of us. I have always been called a little hippie chile.

I have a brother named Cosmos River, and 2 sisters, Kaliko Rain and Zen Wildflower. I have a son named Solstanice. Some of my sisters and brothers kids? Roxi, Jasmine, Tequila Rose (first name), Georgia Peach, Romeo, Karma Liberty, and Marley (after Bob). I guess it can be genetic!

Ok, this is a way ancient post but I have to add to this. I believe my friends names take the frickin hippie pot pie. YO.
Ok. My favourite of all time is (or was when we were teenagers) a delicate, rocker stoner chick named Revolutionary Hope. Viva. She went by Revi.
The two hardest names to live with were Yippee and Swallow. He became John when he could but now goes by Yippee again. Swallow is Oseama Swallow and she married a guy whos last name is Wood. She thought it was all too porn so they changed their name to Heartwood. We lovingly teased her and called her o-semen-swallow-hard-wood. Oops. Now she is with Ryder, or Ride-her as he is affectionately known. Swallow changged her name for a short while when we were teenagers as did many of the folks on the list. All my love and respect! They have great humour and love their names.
I know a Sunny (side up), Calmand Eazy (over), Freedom Windchild, Cinnamon (not a hippy kid), Star, Sky, Leaf, Moss, Shanti, Happy Apple Blue Feather, Eva November Sea Ember Crazy Tree and my great friend Jesseca Johanna Lysastrata Divina and her three siblings Snowflower, Fawn Robin and Morning Sun. My brothers are Jeremy Sage Moving Sky and Ishi Naom.
Lets see Star claims she met a Yoni and Lingam as a kid at some festival...
I know a Kachina Lightening, Cosima, Saphira, Shellana, Dove, Neema, Gillia(previous 4 all siblings) Shoshanna,Rambling Rose, Shadow (last name Light), a couple of Orion's, Anime, Juniper, Tanyth, Rainbow, Starling Karuna, Mopsy, Hoatie, Vishva, Aramis, Venus, Sunmoon, Honour, Soleil and I could really go on but thats lots....My love and devotion to you all who have been named.
My only advice to new age hippies or freaks who wish to name from the heart is to give at least one innocous name like Bob or a pretty sound like Sala before you throw in the starchild windflowing stuff. O, I am Maili

I raised 2 "tie-dye-diaper" babies, though, more usual than not, they were diaperless, ( a total of 5 kids lived in the commune of 15 original people, with several other people coming and going over the years that the "Cottage House" was in existance...

back to the names. our daughter is Alystra Rene, our son is Khedron Charles. they are now 35 and 32, their names are from the Book The City and the Stars by Arthur C Clarke....

the other kids that lived in the commune with us were Damian, (yes, he lived up to his name), Bianca, and at the moment the other kids name escapes me...

then we had many more kids in and out as the cast of charactors changed over the course of time...

I have always been know as LyingBare, which has been shortened over the years to just "Bare" my name for legal purposes is Barbara, though family call me Bobbi...... or bare...

those were the days, how I miss them, times were easier then and for me the nostalgia is sweet....

the "Cottage House" commune was in existance from 1974 - 1979, the house was a two story ranch style home, with 4 bedrooms downstairs, and a full upstairs loft...

which leads me to the reason I sought out this tribe, I am currently looking for an active Commune, intentional living or perhaps a Co-Op for a friend that is looking for that type of living arrangement..

though we do still have an open door communal type home, we are not taking any new people in due to space available.. all we have ow are couches, as the rooms in our home are filled....

if anyone knows of a communal type space please contact me.....

    Much Love and Thanks
    Bare

where do you live Bare? "Cottage house" sounds familiar but there were probably a bunch of communal houses in a bunch of places with names sort of like that.

I am in Berkeley area, live with my 13 and a half year old daughter, horrified by the high rice of housing and would LOVE to find the:right housemates for semi-communal setup maybe in a fixer-upper with good yard for organic food gardening.

we should probably start a new thread here or elsewhere to talk about ideal group living situations and how close a scene needs"to be to our ideals to work...

      thanks! judith

PS if I;d had a boy i was gonna name him Joaquin. my daughter Lia sys she;s glad she;s not a boy because she doesn't like the name much. I still like some nature names, and some Arabic and Hindu names and old Anglicized Hebrew like the 19th century mountain men and pioneers.... guess my hippie roots are still showing...pretty unlikely I;m naming any more children in this lifetime except for dogs, cats, turtles,or other non-humans...

Not exactly sure if I could be called a hippie, I grew up in a pretty conventional family with a sister named Emily. Growing up I did know three patchulies, several forests, hopi, aurora, neon, mary jane, poppy, jasmine, river, alder, trillium, sky, and echo. my mum once delivered a baby named placenta. my cousins are named xena and olive. I was born in 88' and grew up in portland OR.
